School Marm, Saloon Dancer, or Civil War Amputee?

So, I went to my first Open Call for movie extras the other day! Quite the interesting experience.... The call was from 10 am to 9 pm. I got there with a friend at 7pm.... hehe, late as always.... Good thing I didn't go at 9am, though.... apparently the line wrapped aroung the building! Me and T waited in line for about 30-45 minutes before getting into the application/photo/wardrobe fitting. Russ got there even later and got through even faster than we did.... grrrr! The entire process took about 1 1/2 hours.... not too shabby..... waiting for wardrobe measurements took the longest.

Wardrobe measurements, you ask? Oh, I forgot to mention.... the casting call was for an old western movie.... how much fun would that be?! Maybe I'll be a school marm.... or a saloon dancer.... or a civil war amputee (hehe)! I'd really test my (non-existant) acting talent with that last role!

Close to 3 thousand people went out for the 1-day only Casting Call.... even more mailed their applications (I should have thought of that!).... They begin their selection process in early September.... so I would assume that T, Russ and I will only find out if we made the cut in late September.... I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Oh.... only after going out for the Casting Call, was I informed by Russ that the one and only Brad Pitt was starring in this movie.... oh boy.... now I've got my toes crossed too! And now I know why there was an inexplicable number of teenage girls at the Casting Call....

Still on Hold....

So, I don't quite have time to write all that I would want to tonight, so I thought I'd leave you with a few short (but funny) video clip links depicting first, a spoof of the whole Tom Cruise/Oprah fiasco, and second, the real deal.... I hope this tides you over until I get a chance to blabber again, and that you watch and enjoy!

Cleanin' Out My Closet

I decided to do a complete overhaul on my bedroom. One not-so-insignificant aspect of this overhaul was the daunting duty of cleaning out my closet. I remembered having some old games and puzzles in there, that I wanted to store somewhere, to use when I get my own classroom, one of these days.

But, to my amazement and amusement, I sure had more than a couple of old games in there. Thought I'd share with you some of my more interesting closet-cleaning collectibles. Please be aware that none of the following has been fabricated or even the slightest bit embellished.... I really did dig up this stuff from the bowels of my closet....

1) Hungry Hungry Hippos
2) Rockin' Robins
3) Jazzy Jewelery
4) Body Rap.... does anyone remember this?! I'd be amazed....
5) Various Barbie paraphernalia (the Corvette and the Camper!)
6) Snakes and Ladders
7) Troll Dolls
8) An X-Ray a doctor took of my troll doll (you can see his bum from both sides!)
9) TiddlyWinks
10) Popples
11) Operation!
12) Battleship (the original.... not the snazzy electronic one they have now!)
13) LiteBrite (complete with all of the picture outline-stencily things)
14) Pogo Ball
15) Rollerskates and a Hula Hoop (not to be used simultaneously, so I was told....)

There was more, but I realize I'm sounding increasingly more like a pathalogical packrat, so I'll stop at 15.... haven't even touched on the clothing, though!

It Really Irks Me....

Is it just me, or has the age when girls are "allowed" to wear suggestive and revealing clothing taken a dramatic nosedive?

I have two jobs -- for one, I work in retail, for the other, I teach Kindergarten to Grade 8 students. So, while these two jobs are at opposite ends of the city and I interact with young people who are situated in various income brackets, it never fails to shock me that so many of these young girls (of every age and financial situation) are being permitted (by their parents, their schools, themselves.... whoever) to wear sexually suggestive and revealing articles of clothing.

For example, I was walking through the mall, during my break, today, when I glanced to my left and saw a small herd of young girls (they may have been related) ranging in ages from about 5 years to approximately 10 or 11 years old. Upon looking at these girls for a moment, I noticed that a girl around the age of 9 was wearing an incredibly short dress -- so short, in fact, that any and every passerby could see her undergarments, even when she was standing perfectly upright. I find this absolutely appalling.

Yet, I refuse to believe that most little girls "sneak out" of the house like this, going unnoticed by their parents or guardians. I say this because, also today, a young girl (around 10 years old) entered my store with adults whom I presume were her mother and father. Very upright and proper looking parents. Yet, this young girl was clad in a short short skirt, and a skintight white tank top. Also very inappropriate. To drive my "most-parents-are-not-UNaware" point home, so many young students arrive at school in short skirts and halter tops, that I've lost track.... Many of these girls are dropped off at school by their parent(s) and surely, their parents also pay for most of these scant and suggestive articles of clothing..... What has happened to society's values and morals?.... I remember being sent home in junior high school to change my shirt because when I reached WAY WAY up in the air, a few centimetres of my midriff showed for but a moment....

Why are parents and schools permitting -- and even encouraging -- young girls to become sexualized so very early? Why do they abhor the thought of child exploitation, and yet permit young girls to dress in such a manner as to, invariably, attract attention from the (presumably older) opposite sex, by the manner in which they allow their young charges to be viewed in public?

Frustrates me to no end, I tell ya.
Sometimes gives me this sick, sad feeling in both my stomach and heart....

P.S. I actually think that "irk" is a ridiculously odd sounding word.... but it works, I suppose.

A Little Ditty

So, this is a little ditty that, miraculously, I managed to recall after so many years. Here's the (short) history behind this poem.... a few years ago, I chose a stall in a women's restroom (I don't love public washrooms, but when need be....) and I was delighted to find some reading material scrawled on the wall of the stall, to keep my mind occupied for a few moments....
Here it goes....

If you sprinkle
When you tinkle,
Be a sweetie,
Wipe the seatie.
By: Anonymous Bathroom-Goer

Not too shabby for restroom scrawl.
Anyways, I was reminded of this piece of text when I recently attempted to find a semi-sanitary stall in a public washroom.... for Pete's sake, why do so many women seem to have such bad aim?! It shouldn't be so hard, really.... it's all about positioning. Ah well, hopefully more people will heed the message burried so deep within this astoundingly complex ditty.
